Dedicated to Martin Thompson, Sam Vera, and Isabel Thompson
|
The Golden Pachamanca is held every year by Dick Thompson and The
Vera Family.
Dick Thompson and Sam Vera became friends in the 1970's.
Sam Vera arrived moved to Denver from Peru in 1958,followed by
his wife and children.
They moved to Leadville where Sam worked as a mining engineer
for the Climax Molybdenum Mine. The history of this local celebration
began in 1960 in Leadville, Colorado.
Sam and Dina Vera,and their
children (which became 8 later), celebrated the first Pachamanca with
friends and associates from the Climax Mine. For the next 16 years,
the Veras continued to hold annual Pachamancas, introducing Peruvian
cooking to the locals of Leadville and the Climax.
On June 17,1972, Climax (later to become AMAX),inaugurated the largest open pit molybdenum
mine in the world, by holding a Pachamanca for the selected executives, staff, and management
of the mine. Special guests were invited for the largest pachamanca to date: 480 people.
In 1975, to celebrate E-Day at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden , the Veras held a Pachamanca
for 380 students, professors and of course our friends in Denver.
In 1976, Sam Vera retired from Climax and moved to Golden, Colorado.
It is in Denver where many of our close friends and family now live.
Every year is special for the Vera family and the Thompson family;
Martin Thompson passed away June 2007, only weeks before the pachamanca
Samuel Vera passed away in the fall of 2002,
and Isabel Thompson passed away in 2001.
Sam and Isabel worked tirelessly
to make the Pachamanca a special occasion for all.
Dick Thompson will hold the Pachamanca in his ranch as he has for many years.
This Pachamanca will be on honor to Mr. Thompson's wife - Isabel Thompson and
Samuel Vera ,both with the Peruvian feeling that we shall always miss.
